Is it alien contact? A sign of the End of Days? Or was it a smart phone glitch?
An image showing a beam of light descending from the sky and onto a pyramid in the ancient Mayan city of Chichen Itza has taken the web by storm. Hector Siliezar snapped the picture on his iPhone when he visited the ruins with his family back in 2009. The beam of light seems to come down on top of El Castillo, a pyramid once serving as a sacred temple to the Mayan god Kukulkan.
Siliezar is quoted as saying that he didn't see the light beam in person. In fact, a storm was brewing at the time and he wanted to take a picture to capture the lightning dancing across the sky. In the first two pictures he took, nothing was amiss. However, the third picture is where the light beam can be seen.
So was it a sign from an ancient god or a distortion in the image from a lightning bolt that caused the beam to appear? Either way, the picture is pretty cool.
